Competitions - Rules and Conditions

The Club runs various internal competitions throughout the year:-

Championship Pair ; Michael Farey Trophy ; Weir Trophy ; Individual Club Championship ; Slammer of the Year ; Most Improved Player ; Most Improved Pair ; Ladies Championship Pair ; Mens Championship Pair ; Most Masterpoints ; Simultaneous Pairs

All competition winners receive a commemorative trophy to permanently retain and, in addition, many competitions have their own club trophy. Full rules and current trophy holders are given below.

In addition to our own competitions, we participate and compete in local matches against other clubs.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS

The Championship Pairs is, as the name suggests, the most prestigious Club Competition and the winners are presented with a magnificent cup to retain for 12 months. The cup was generously donated to the Club by John and Jill Williams.

1.  The qualifying rounds will be held from the last Wednesday in November until the second Wednesday in May. Pairs will be ranked in order of the accumulation of their best 12 weeks percentages and have at least 9 scores to qualify.

2.  The Championship Pair will be the pair that is in first place at the conclusion of the qualifying rounds.

3. The winning pair and runners up pair are sponsored by the Club to represent the Club in the WCBA Club Championship Pairs event.

4. Masterpoints in accordance with the EBU Masterpoints Handbook (Club Edition) are awarded.

Our 2007 Club Champions are:  Alan Boyes and Mel Downing

MICHAEL FAREY TROPHY

The Michael Farey Trophy is an annual competition in memory of Michael Farey, a founder member of the Club.

1. The competition will be open to all players but only Club members may win the Trophy.

2. The Michael Farey Trophy is a Handicap Pairs event with the winners being decided after application of handicap scores. The Handicaps will be calculated using the average scores of the preceding 13 weeks results.

3.  A partnership without a handicap will be ineligible to win the Trophy.

4. The competition will be held on a normal club night in March.

5. Masterpoints will be awarded for the normal club evening result but no masterpoints can be issued for the Michael Farey Trophy event.

6. The Trophy will be presented to the winning pair at the earliest suitable opportunity.

WEIR TROPHY - Teams Competition

Due to the generosity of grandmasters, Grahame and Sharleen Weir we hold an annual single session Teams of Four Competition. The winners are presented with the Weir Trophy.

The exact format of the competition cannot be finally determined until all team entrants are known, but it is normal for it to be a multiple teams event. If this is not possible, a Swiss Teams or other teams competition may be substituted at the discretion of the Director for the evening.

The date of the competition will usually be in May and members should check their calendar of events for precise information. From 2008, in the event of a tie, the result of the match between the two tied teams will determine the winning team; and if that fails to produce an outright winner the result will be determined by the total number of victories and, as a last resort, on the cut of the cards.

Teams will NOT be randomly selected - therefore members should team up in good time and appoint a Captain. All teams will be expected to register their entry, which is free, prior to the actual event by notifying the Events Secretary.

SIMULTANEOUS PAIRS

The club enters for many simultaneous events with differing sponsoring organisations. Visitors are welcome at these events but we limit visitors to two simultaneous events only.

The sponsors of these events usually take up to three weeks to confirm / ratify the results and for that reason our own scoring of the event is provisional. Only after confirmation of the result has been received will masterpoints be issued.
