WEIR TROPHY WINNERS

Congratulations to Wilf, Ken, Angela and Bernard on taking the trophy home this year! Doug presented them with the shield, generously donated to the club by Graham and Sharleen Weir, after the event held at the club on the 27th July 2010.

SHAKESPEARE TEAMS - 18 JULY

After a disappointing start, our team from Pershore gradually crept up the leader board in this annual Swiss Teams event; as usual superbly hosted and organised by Stratford on Avon Bridge club. Twenty teams again participated, and whilst the competition was keen, everyone behaved impeccably - in fact, as always, this was a most enjoyable event.

Our congratulations go to Arden, who managed yet again to keep us out of first place - maybe next year will be when we get to lift the trophy!

Also, well done Evesham - we had a tight battle with them throughout the day and when inevitably we were drawn to play each other, there was more than just local pride at stake! The outcome was an honourable draw which did neither side any favours.  Evesham finished the competition in a well deserved third place.

Pershore's team was:  Louie & Martin ;  Bernard & Alan

AVON CUP WINNERS - Again!!

Congratulations to PERSHORE A for winning the Avon Cup for us again this year. The team of Wilf, Ken, Sally and Bernard played some fine bridge to bring home the trophy in what was another enjoyable event.

CONGRATULATIONS - Ron Allen Award

The WCBA Chairman, Nick Forward, presents Alan with the Ron Allen Award in recognition of his contribution to the game of bridge in Worcestershire. The presentation was made at the club on the 24th March 2010.

WELL DONE, LIZ!!

Many congratulations to Liz who, on the 7th March, succeeded in becoming a Professional English Bridge Union accredited teacher. Her certificate was presented to her by John Pain (EBU Education Manager) prior to the start of the Ranked Masters tournament.

Liz is the 71st EBU Professional status teacher in the country and the only such teacher in Worcestershire. Professional EBUTA Teachers have a minimum of 5 years teaching experience (of which at least 2 must be teaching bridge). They have attended at least one teacher training workshop or EBUTA Teachers' Jamboree, they have a proven track record of excellent teaching from their employers (or if teaching is all done privately - from the students themselves). They also have a sound understanding of bidding and play - the emphasis is on sound not expert, evaluated by a written test of bridge knowledge and an oral examination. They encourage their students to develop beyond the classroom (provided the students want to be developed!) by running duplicates, small tournaments, progressing towards club play - helping to set up clubs where nothing suitable exists. They also have a working knowledge of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge and are expected to have attended at least the Club Directors Essentials Course. Finally they are prepared to be an essential part of the development of EBUTA by helping to run Workshops and other training events, particpate in the assessment processes and act as mentors to other bridge teachers.

Liz was a founder member of Pershore and became a qualified Club Director in 2000. She began teaching the game in 2001 and in 2006 passed the accreditation examinations as a Qualified EBUTA teacher and is now a Professional! An excellent achievement!!

Best Behaviour at Bridge
Bridge is an extremely enjoyable game. Courteous behaviour is an exceptionally important part of that enjoyment.
This guide serves as a brief reminder of how to behave at the bridge table.   We are sure that all players naturally follow this code of conduct but there are times when concentration and pressure can take their toll and it is for these situations that we issue this as a reminder.

Greet others in a friendly manner prior to start of play on each round.
Be a good "host" or "guest" at the table.
Make your convention card readily available to your opponents and fill it out completely.
Make bridge enjoyable for yourself, partner and opponents.
Give credit when opponents make a good bid or play.
Take care of your personal grooming.
Ensure that your mobile phone is turned off.
Enjoy the company as well as the game.

Remember that it is rude to criticise your partner or opponents in public, to be less than polite at the table, to gloat over good results or object to a call for the tournament director or to dispute or argue about a director’s ruling.

Please call the director if you think you may have been affected by bad behaviour. You will be helping others as well as yourselves. The Director WILL give an immediate penalty if bad behaviour has occurred.

As in all games that are governed by rules and regulations, bad behaviour will be penalised .....

If a player at the table behaves in an unacceptable manner, the director should be called immediately. Annoying behaviour, embarrassing remarks, or any other conduct which might interfere with the enjoyment of the game is specifically prohibited by Law 74A. Law 91A gives the director the authority to assess disciplinary penalties. This can include immediate disciplinary board penalties, and if a future violation is incurred at the same event, disqualification in that event. The guilty party or parties will be deemed not to have played in that event. No masterpoints will be awarded and no refunds received, and the Club Chairman will also be notified.
